These Government Hill residences overlook the active Alaska Railroad railyard, with views of Downtown Anchorage and the Chugach Mountains beyond. This series of six duplexes uses the steep south-facing slope of the bluff as the launching point for an unusual layout centered on southern exposure. Residents park on the north side of each one-story unit, where a translucent door and high, narrow window hint at light and warmth within. The repetition of these elements along the street gives the impression of a row of luminaries lighting the northern winter nights. After entering the main living space, the focus on light continues with large south-facing windows that open the space to views and solar gain. Residents progress downstairs to the bedrooms, which, because of the slope, benefit from the same expansive views. A roof deck, kept low with the modest profile of each building, ensures full appreciation of the spectacular location.
